UNESCO Activities
of relevance for the International Day of Peace 2006
Through
resolution 55/282, the United Nationals General Assembly designated 21 September
as the “International Day of Peace”, inviting Member States, international organizations
and civil society to commemorate it each year in an appropriate way. Find out more at the Day's offical

In
addition to the activities of individual UNESCO
Field Offices – the Organization will observe this day by awarding in a special ceremony the 2006 UNESCO Prize
for Peace Education to Mr Christopher Gregory Weeramantry (Sri Lanka) in
recognition of his ongoing commitment and work in support of the concept and
culture of peace. The Fundación para la Reconciliación (Colombia) will receive
a Special Mention under the UNESCO Prize for its efforts in introducing the
concept of "emotional literacy" as a means of promoting reconciliation
and forgiveness. Complementing the award ceremony, a round table will be
organized on the theme of the “culture of peace” with the laureate, a
representative of the organization receiving the special mention and members of
the prize jury. To
